The Basics: Hearing Aids

Did you know that only one out of five people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually wears one? If you think you might have hearing loss, visit your doctor. He or she may refer you to an otolaryngologist or audiologist to determine the cause, type, and extent of your hearing problem and whether hearing aids will help you.

How hearing aids help

Hearing aids are electronic devices, which fit inside or behind the ear to amplify sounds. Hearing aids help, but they do not restore normal hearing or eliminate background noise.

Choosing a hearing aid

With many choices available, you need to decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid is right for you and your type of hearing loss. For example, you will be able to choose either analog or digital, and whether you want the hearing aid inside your ear, or over your ear. Before purchasing a hearing aid, find out whether the warranty covers repairs and if there is a trial period.

Adjusting to a hearing aid

Adjusting to a hearing aid is a gradual process. Your brain will need to become accustomed to differnent sounds, and you'll need to learn learn to listen in various environments: quiet, noisy, with echoes, and so on.

You may find your own voice sounds too loud. Be sure to tell your audiologist, although he or she may or may not be able to correct this particular problem. Still, most people get used to this in time and it is worth working through.

If you hear a whistling sound or feedback, be sure to see your audiologist. This is caused by the fit of the hearing aid or by earwax or fluid buildup and can be corrected.
